I parachute into a nonprofit at a time of executive transition, helping boards and staff keep morale high, directing operations with a thoughtful and steady hand, and making changes that can be made during these vulnerable times. An interim executive helps to avoid the potential organizational trauma that can accompany the loss of a CEO. A fresh view from an outsider who is a seasoned executive helps to bolster everyone’s capacity, regardless of the circumstances around the leader’s departure. I reassure donors and stakeholders and support the search for a new executive.
Project Management
Few nonprofits have sufficient staff or bandwidth to oversee sweeping projects that are likely to impose significant change. I can create and execute projects on behalf of the board or the organization’s staff leadership, such as recruitment of new senior staff; redesign of the organizational structure; or the production of a high-visibility event. Together we can ramp up operations for significant new opportunities or downshift if aspects of the organization or the programs themselves are slated to change.
Coaching and Organizational Guidance
Leadership can be lonely, and thoughtful executives and members of the board who seek to improve their leadership capacity often seek guidance and support from an experienced outsider. These consultations can be short-term or ongoing and allow tough questions to be framed and support to be provided for the most thoughtful and productive answers. With the goal of improving effectiveness, these sessions can be one-on-one or team-based.
Board and Governance Support
Serving on a board of a nonprofit is complex and demanding. Helping develop strategy around board growth and philanthropy, recruitment of a new (or the first) CEO or executive director, or best practices for board governance are some things I can help with. Together we strengthen the critical relationships between the board and the staff. I support emerging leadership from the board or work with first-time members to find their footing and have a satisfying experience in this new and complex role.
Organizational Assessment
At critical junctures in the life of an organization, there are significant opportunities–or moments of doubt and concern–that can be harnessed for improvement, growth, or a shift in emphasis. Partnerships can be identified, reporting lines can be changed, clarity in purpose and direction can be articulated and communicated. I come in and study the organization and make recommendations for future action. Together, we can establish priorities for recruitment and retention of key staff, programs, or shifts in funding streams.
